Referee Training
Referee Training includes 2 parts, the referee-specific training and the Referee Safe Haven Training.
Referee classes are scheduled periodically, usually just before the start of the Fall and Spring seasons. Check the calender to find out the current referee training schedule. If you can't make that class, or a class isn't currently schedule, please contact our Referee Administrator who will assist you in getting the necessary training.
Referee Certification Levels
There are several levels of referee certification.
The easiest level of certification is for the U8 Referee. This class takes approximately 3 hours (1 evening) and certifies you to referee U6 & U8 games.
The next level is called the Regional Referee. This class takes approximately 6 hours (two evenings) and certifies you to referee U6, U8, U10 and U12 games as your experience warrants. (This class can be taken in two sections, consisting of the U8 portion, and later, completing the remainder of the course for the full Regional Referee certification.)
How old do I have to be?
AYSO encourages youths 10 and older to volunteer as Youth Referees. Youths between 10 and 12 can be certified as U8 Referees. You must be 12 or older for certification at the Regional Referee level or higher.
Safe Haven Training - What is this and why do referees need it?
The AYSO Safe Haven Program is designed to address the growing need for child and volunteer protection. Safe Haven is an educational program that includes three components: accreditation; volunteer training and certification; and protection policies. For more information regarding AYSO's Safe Haven Program, please contact our Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate (CVPA).
On-Line Safe Haven Training
If you cannot attend one of the local training sessions, referees can complete the Safe Haven Training online. Go to Volunteer Training to find out how.
